As I inch closer to The Now...

...an order for two of these was placed today: a 60GB 5th Generation in Black for myself as well a 60GB refurbished 4th Generation iPod photo for [info]troisbalances, as she cares not a wit about video playback. I care not much more, but it will be nice to be able to catch the inevitable episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" that I'll end up missing in season three…

At the very least, I now won't be stuck listening to the Adult Contemporary music piped in at Physical Therapy center I'm attending. More than the aerobic workouts, more than the maddening balancing exercises, weightwork or the inevitable horrifically painful stretching at the end of the sessions, the music was pain personified. I can stand a pulled hamstring - that simply needs alternating ice, heat, and Vicodin. There's no such easy cure for Jack Johnson.

Any recommendations as to headphones, as I've heard about the bundled set. I'd like to keep to under the price of the iPod actual, however. I've heard good things about the Shure E2c's, but the Etymotic Research's ER-6i are the proverbial Shit when it comes to fairly inexpensive sound quality and comfort. However, and pardon the pun, I'm all ears...

Anyone that can guess my engraving gets my everlasting love - here's a hint; it's been used in this journal multiple times as both a subject as well as post material, and very much fits the subject matter. What, you wanted money if you get it right?!? How do you think I paid for that above?

Ooh, shiny. ::pets longingly::

Seriously, what is it with the awful music in physical therapy offices? It pleases nobody. To this day, I associate "Mambo No. 5" with pain, and not just because it's a crappy song.

I think that's exactly that - to please, and therefore offend no one. I asked how much it green it would take to have it changed to Opie & Anthony, who on terrestrial radio are replayed from 3-6pm here, right when I usually schedule my appointments...

I was told I'd have to buy the place. ;-)

...and your "Mambo No. 5" is my "How Bizarre", which I heard for the first time since it was a one-hit wonder. The last 3 sessions were bad enough, that was the breaking point.

A side note: I called Apple not one hour after placing the order to change one letter in my engraving (from capitalization to lower-case) but was actually ready to ship by then and couldn't be changed, so after giving me numerous options (returning unopened, etc.) that would be nowhere worth the effort they apologized for being so expedient and are throwing in a USB Power Adapter for "my trouble". I should have more trouble like this. ;-)

Ooooooh. Shiny!

The earbuds that came with my Neuros are very decent and rather inexpensive. Plus they're black and orange.

Ian, YOU were Supposed to tell me when you found somebody who would buy us one. That was the deal, 'member? Looserface!!

P.S. Deal breaking turns me into a third grader.

I didn't know that finding myself counted!?! If I got hooked up by a Sugar Mama/Dady that's one thing - however, with self-payment I call shenanigans :P*

Lot of things turn you into a third grader. And don't say that me using the term "shenanigans" does the same: the South Park gang are forth graders. :D

So what grade does that put you in? :-P.

Congratulations on the purchase Ian! I have the iPod mini version from 2 years ago when it first came out. This was back when the travel charger was included for free along with the USB and firewire cables! Good times. Good times.

If you find comfortable earphones, I too am all ears. I have tried numerous brands from the inexpensive to the "Why did I pay that much for this crap?" I've been so impressed by the different earphones that I don't even remember the brand names. My problem is the buds fall out of my ears. I must have oddly shaped ears. Even the over the ear type earphones that kind of hang on your ear didn't work for me.

ear buds don't stay put in my ears, either. I think they're too small. (ears, not buds.)

I got these instead and surprisingly they do stay put.

I think my ears are too small too!

I've looked at those earphones but I didn't think they would stay put either. I will give them a try. Thanks!

You might also want to try what I term ear bud or full-speaker clip-ons. Best of both worlds in that they stay on nicely but are almost as small as standard earbuds.

I had a pair of behind-the-head and they worked quite well, no "fall-out" like earbuds but better looking and not hair-smushing like standard headphones.

Yes, I can how I look. If I didn't I'd use my reference-quality Audio-Technica ATH-m40fs, but the dork factor certainly donsn't need increasing! ;)

I'll certainly keep you clued-in on my headphone testing. I'm attempting to stay far from "Why did I pay that much for this crap" range, but that's what I have

You may want this:
http://www.surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetail&item=CBL10184
so you can run the video out to a TV. The real ones from Apple are ~$20. These are half the price, and retractable.

And I've been using this to convert video files to iPod format:
http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/
Site is in Japanese, but you can find the download file.
iTunes will convert some files, but not all.

On electronic equipment that's designed to be in motion... are you kidding!?! ;-)

And [info]troisbalances's Educational Store Discount is quite handy with that as well, along with the actual physical gear.
